Barbara Carpenter's Remarks
Following the Math Forum

The following text comes to Mathematically Correct from Barbara Carpenter, Ph.D., a member of the County Board of Education and a Candidate for San Diego Unified Board of Education from District A. Dr. Carpenter attended the Math Forum at Muirlands Middle School held on Feb. 1, and offers the following comments.
I attended your recent meeting at Muirlands Middle School, not only because I am a candidate for the City's Board of Education, but because I share your concerns that the way education is controlled from the top down, may not be in the best interests of students, teachers, and parents.

My recommendation to you, as a current elected County Board of Education member from your district, is that you sign a petition and gater a strong, persuasive group of people together to meet with the Unified's Board of Education asking them to allow you to use a waiver for textbooks which you would like used in the classroom. I would meet with classroom teachers, principals, and other paretns to work together in selecting texts which are more traditional and which you, who are experts in the mathematics and scientific fields, believe are more appropriate for those of you who support this effort. This approach, I believe, would give "options" to teachers and parents who support traditional programs, as well as to teachers and parents who prefer the state supported CPM program. Good luck in your endeavor and keep me posted. I am very interested in what you are doing.
